Yeah he locks up during the actual fight in the reactor, but 1) he's green and 2) the way the Marines are depicted as using command and control (with the platoon leader as more of a coordinator and overseer/commander) isn't that hot for what happens in the reactor. but even at the minimum, ash knew that the facehugger had implanted something in kane's chest before dying, and that the derelict pilot's chest had exploded outward. he had some kind of reasonable inference that something was about to come out of kane. and he could probably guess that it was the organism he was sent for.
